Thursday 07 June Gerolimenas
We're on the same latitude as Southern Sicily and the straights of Gibraltar and at a point where the Ionian sea meets the Aegean. Gerolimenas means "old port", and it has taken us a while to be able to pronounce it properly! For some reason the water here is incredibly pellucid and still, more so than anywhere else we've been. We enjoy it early in the morning before breakfast. There are shards of sea encrusted pots and pithoi dotted around the old walls of the hotel. Large cargo ships travel east and west across the heat hazed horizon. We spend the day around and in the translucent water. When the heat of the day has slightly abated we wander into the town. It's a curious mix of ruins, deserted homes, and a few hotels and restaurants. We buy another larger scale map of the Mani from the only little shop in town. This shows the contours in alarming clarity, and we plan a trip to the southernmost tip of the Peloponnese tomorrow.
