Friday 8 June: a trip to Vathia
It seems to be very windy this morning and there are white horses in the bay. Unperturbed we set off on our bikes with the intention of visiting the ancient deserted Mani city of Vathia and then the furthest south point at Cape Tenara. However very early on we become aware of the challenging conditions when we are both blown off the road and my sun visor flies off into a field. The wind is incredibly strong and we even have to pedal up hill. We decide to press on and after a long climb we reach Vathia with stunning scenery of the Mani coast. We explore the deserted streets and turrets and decide it is too windy to carry on further. We find a slightly sheltered cove at Kyparisa where we cool off in the clear water and while away a few hours reading before our thirst gets the better of us and without anymore water we decide to head back. All tavernas are closed but we do manage to get a can of coke before I expire completely. A beer in Geroleminos before relaxing again by the pool. We have had to move to a new room at the hotel so it feels like another break. Still a sea view but no steep staircase to challenge nocturnal visits to the loo!
